The Power of Explaining Work Out Loud
Mar 5, 2026

There’s a powerful study strategy many students never use: explaining the work out loud as if teaching someone else.
This technique, known as verbal active recall, turns passive learning into deep learning. When students speak through the steps, the brain must organise information, recall facts, and justify logic. In that moment, true understanding is revealed.
Try this during homework:
🗣 “Explain how you solved this.”
🗣 “Teach this to me like I’ve never seen it before.”
If they can explain it easily, they truly understand.
If they struggle — that tells us exactly where to refine.
Talking isn't distraction. Talking is learning.
💬 If your child struggles with studying or motivation, our tutors can build a personalised study routine that works — calm, manageable and proven.
